  1. Your dachshund: harness or collar?

harris tweed dog harness, in orange with yellow lining

It’s always a dilemma for dog owners, especially with small dogs like dachshunds.  Is it better for my dog to wear a harness when out on a lead, or a collar?  It’s an issue we’ve wrestled with, both with our own two dachshunds and when designing and producing our bespoke dachshund coats for Barkmatic.  Read on to find out more.

  3. Choosing a dog coat for your dachshund: custom-fit vs. standard sizing

Choosing a dog coat for your dachshund: custom-fit vs. standard sizing

At Barkmatic we don’t believe in standard sizes for dachshund coats, because in real life dachshunds don't come in standard sizes either.  Dachshunds are not simply mini or standard. One look at the participants in any sausage dog walk will tell you that! They come in all sizes and proportions.  What started as a shopping quest for our own dachshund is now the Barkmatic brand, and our commitment to custom-fit coats as the solution for dachshund outdoor clothing.  Why not try a custom-fit Barkmatic coat for the same price as an off-the-peg dachshund coat from other brands? 4. Dog coats for dachshunds: custom-fit vs. standardised sizing?

Dog coats for dachshunds: custom-fit vs. standardised sizing?

Here at Barkmatic we don’t believe in standardised sizes for dachshund coats, because in real life dachshunds don't come in standardised sizes.  We know that there are loads of stylish, well-made coats available online for dachshunds, but we’ve found that none of them would properly fit Sunny, our standard black and tan three year old teckel.  What started as a shopping quest for our own dachshund is now the Barkmatic brand, and our commitment to custom-fit as the solution for dachshund outdoor clothing.  Read on to find out why we think custom-fit makes sense for dachshunds and their humans.

  5. A sausage adventure: dachshund mudlarking on the River Thames foreshore

A sausage adventure: dachshund mudlarking on the River Thames foreshore

A few weeks ago we checked the Thames tide tables, got up very early, and jumped on the Overground train to Rotherhithe station. We were there for a photoshoot on the Thames foreshore at low tide, photographing our newest dog coat, the Superstretch, an easy-on easy-off dachshund base layer. Almost as exciting for us was the chance to go mudlarking on the muddy foreshore.

  6. Do dogs really need clothing? Reasons why your dachshund could benefit from a dog coat

Do dogs really need clothing? Reasons why your dachshund could benefit from a dog coat

Do dogs really need clothing?  Surely they’re born with their clothes on?  That pug in a dusty grey cashmere cable knit, or the Jack Russell in a metallic down jacket fit for the ski slopes, may be better dressed than you or me. But is it necessary?

Not all dogs are created equal when it comes to staying warm. Dogs with longer and thicker fur have an insulation advantage.  Large, athletic dogs and dogs with substantial fur seem to power through wet and cold weather, entirely oblivious.  Dachshunds’ hairless tummies are only inches from the ground. They are famously reluctant to go out in the wet, despite their fierce reputation as hunting dogs. Well-fitting dog coats can be extremely beneficial for some dogs, including dachshunds. Read on to find out why.

  7. Undercover dog: introducing our wrap-under dachshund dogcoats just in time for winter

Undercover dog: introducing our wrap-under dachshund dogcoats just in time for winter

If you live with dachshunds you know how wet and dirty underneath they can get, all year round.  It’s pretty much unavoidable given their low slung body shape, with a tummy just inches off the ground.

One of the things that inspired us to start Barkmatic was to solve the ‘underneath’ problem.  Off the shelf dog raincoats and winter coats just don’t fit dachshunds without major customisation, which gets a little tiresome after a while.  Our driving passion is to design dachshund coats that cover the chest and underside, and offer good protection underneath our dachshunds as well as over their back.  Our custom-fit service delivers the right fit, right first time.

Here’s what we’ve just added to our online shop for year-round underneath protection for your dachshund.
